Al Amal School and kindergarten for the Deaf has been part of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) since its establishment in 1979. H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah & member of The Supreme Council, in 1981 kindly donated the piece of land on which the school was built. H.H. has been the generous benefactor of SCHS since its early days. Al Amal Kindergarten for the Deaf was officially opened in 1983 in order to provide services for the deaf at a young age. The school provides the specialized services of education, rehabilitation, and empowerment for deaf students from the age of 2 until the age of 20 incorporating classes from KG1 until 12th grade. Commencing with only 12 students in 1979 with textbooks brought from Kuwait, the school curriculum was then developed by the Ministry of Education. This then developed with courses offered within two years by using tuned pronunciation. SCHS signed a ten year contract with a school from Belgium to further develop these courses. Currently, deaf students and main stream students use the same textbooks. Al Amal School uses lip reading, sign language, and tuned pronunciation to teach the deaf.
